This Basalt statue represents Horus in human form as a falcon with ancient hieroglyphics on the spine of the statue, etched cartouche on the base in front of his feet. Lotus flowers are etched around the left and the right edges of the base.
The falcon god Horus was regarded as the embodiment of divine kingship, and as early as the late fourth millennium BC, the pharaoh had a 'Horus name'. In Osirian mythology, Horas was in a long and arduous struggle with the evil god Seth to claim his rightful place as King of Egypt and avenge the murder of his father, Osiris. As a deity of the sky, Horus was associated with the sun and the moon, and seen as a god of the east and thus the sunshine. At his temple at Edfu in Upper Egypt, he was worshipped as part of a triad with his consort Hathor and their child Harsomtus.
